About Cunningham's Interactive Classroom

I am an 11th and 12th-grade math teacher at the Soulsville Charter school. This year, we adopted a mathematical curriculum known as CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics). The principles of CPM are problem-based lessons, collaborative student work, and spaced practice. In my classroom, collaborative student work involves students working in teams to tackle a variety of problems using various techniques and tools. 

This project focuses on essential tools needed to provide hands-on learning: building and testing prototypes, collecting and analyzing data from experiments, The manipulation of these tools will engage students visually, kinesthetically, and linguistically as students investigate, defend their methods and draw conclusions. This is important to me because all students regardless of ability and learning styles will have access to the content. And, using these tools will make math fun and enjoyable as students learn and master the content. 

Through your support, I will purchase the following items 
-Decks of cards 
-Tennis balls 
-Adding machine tape 
-Conical cups 
-Push pins 
-Foam sheets 

Here are a couple of examples of how the materials will be used. Using the CBR 2 machines, which are motion detectors, students will physically walk out the shapes of various functions. In doing so, students will learn about the connections between velocity (speed), direction, and position and understand how functions behave. Using the playdough, students will determine the volume of a three-dimensional object by slicing, which develops spatial awareness and the why behind commonly used formulas for volume.
